Drove to my dad's (soon to be old) house to get a stack of things he'd rather not move. What an odd lot. I had failed to communicate when I'd be there this morning, so I arrived to a completely empty, locked house. I took myself off and sat on the dock at Bauneg Beg Pond and watched the sun sparkles and thought for a while. On the second pass at the house my dad was there. We loaded crap into my car, and then sat and talked about some really heavy things for almost an hour. H,is first wife who developed full blown schizophrenia when they were living in Italy. And then what might have made my mother so mad at him (he thinks she wanted him to put on a tie and work for real money, I think she was just really kind of wigged out at living so hand to mouth when she hadn't been brought up that way.) And then some other things. And then I went back to my mom's.

All decisions at my mother's are second guessed, which makes the process exhausting. If we have a plan, she'll offer two more plans in case the first plan isn't tasty enough, or fun enough, or something. And then she has to evaluate all the plans, and then you settle on one based on, say, flavor, and she'll offer another plan based on price, and it just goes on and on and on and on until I'm ready to scream.

Eventually, having had a nice lunch, Alice and I repaired to Crane's beach, and stomped along trying to make footprints in various hardnesses of sand and doing civil engineering on the tide as it went out and rolled across the beach. We also looked at beach processes and started thinking about the origin of the sand (upstream, or up-ice, or whatever you want to call it), and did a small biological survey and noted in passing that all the smallest clams had holes and were in pairs. It was a very good beach. Followed by a nice ice cream and noting fauna in the Ipswich River including a turtle(!yay!).

tomorrow, Beverly, and possibly an museum. And then home. Amen.
