LaaaAAAAsers ....
Aug. 18th, 2018 11:05 amEver since I saw the Glowforge advertising I have been yearning, or lusting, depending on the temperature of my mood, after one. I watched the short videos, and all the things it can cut from paper to cardboard to plexiglass and computers requiring engraving. It looks so fun!
So in the face of yearning, I decided I could do something. I spent a happy day on Instructables looking at all the laser cutting projects that could be done. I made a list of things I want to cut out. And then I realized I could do more preparation - I could try using the program to draw the things I wanted to cut out. So I've downloaded Inkscape, and worked my way through a couple of experiments, and late Thursday night I finally finished a (small) page of test cases and managed to fix all the problems that was keeping said page from loading at Ponoko - a commercial small batch, on demand laser cutting service. It took six or so tries - I had bad formatting and bad line widths and strange things left over from processing and some other stuff. I decided once it loaded I could feel triumphant, rather than wondering what had taken so long (the way I generally feel using software).
And then I went to my dad's house. The last time I was sleeping here, my step-mother was in the hospital, my father was wigged out and distressed, and we had no idea how long anything was going to be. This time, it was a known time (three days) for a happy reason (she's going to a wedding) and my dad's started anxiolytics and they are helping a lot. So he is missing her, a lot, and checking in to see what day it is and what time it is and when she's coming home, but he's also napping, and sort-of reading (it is hard to read a long sentence when you can't remember the beginning once you reach the end) and talking to the cats. And I know I get to bolt out of here on Sunday afternoon.
I also know that when I get home, Alice will be there soon. I haven't see her in over a month - she's been off to Iceland doing geology field camp on all the volcanic things that Iceland is composed of, and sending home hilarious trip reports basically daily. I have no idea what I did to deserve such an amazing kid, or her older sister either. They met up in Reykjavik at the end of the field camp, and bashed about Iceland together, along with Aerin's Young Man (thank goodness he takes pictures). They all returned to the States late Tuesday, but Alice has been camping with them in their new apartment, and baking and sleeping and visiting when they're around. Al's headed into Boston today to fetch her back and see the new apartment.
