Aerin senior pictures

Aerin couldn't cope with the idea of paying someone to take pictures of her when she had a perfectly good mother for that, so we spent an hour last night (just before the thunderstorms rolled through) trying to get a nice picture. There are many axes of nice. There is nice hair, not blinking, looking at the camera, not too serious, not too forced... and that isn't even counting whether or not I got her at the top of the jump on the trampoline. With her toes pointed.
It was an unanticipated bonding experience. She knows what she wants to look like, roughly, and it is attainable from where she is, so she has skipped a level of frustration I always have when people try to take my picture. I just snapped and snapped, trying to get a lot of things to chose from. She was even interested in the editing process, watching as I bumped the contrast a little in the b&w ones, and trying to get past the washed out white shirt in one or two others. And then (in some extended fit of affection) she just sat next to me on the couch, wedged up against me, as we continued doing other things. Side by side.
Honestly. I've had 17.5 years to get used to this, you'd think I might know or understand my kid better. Or even be ready for her to be this size.
Not so much.
