Jul. 7th, 2010 02:49 pmyesterday, Alice and I started cleaning her room. We are trying to keep from being traumatic, because it is something we both HATE and it makes us both cry. But she needs space, and to winnow her belongings. We started by just pulling a bag of trash out. That was easy. And some of the art that had fallen off the walls didn't need to be kept. so that was easy. And then a pile of books were sorted, and she decided there were some the library could have, even some she'd liked, because she could find them and pat them at the library but didn't have to keep them in her room. So that was easier than she thought. And I was really, really reallly good - if she said a book was to be kept, I said OK, not are you sure??? so letting go was rewarded, but holding was not punished at all.
After her pile of books, we went after the hall bookcase, and it is now all on shelves and I have three bags of books to deliver to the library.
Apparently this is the time of slow but steady cleaning, because I have been emptying a shelf or a box a day, mostly, and only putting back the important stuff. not that the house is not still a sty - but small corners of chaos have been beaten back like some of the bathroom shelves, and a cabinet in the kitchen. the junk drawer is next.
excelsior!
