silly season has started
Jun. 19th, 2019 08:20 pmRehearsals for the Paintbox shows have started, which are just endless foolishness.
I had a longish heart to heart with the Artistic Director about over arching philosophy - which has shifted subtly from things we can find at home or make at home from cheap materials and imagination to the simplicity and outline of animation, still accomplished cheaply. So I feel like I have a clearer path to follow and I am more at ease. Also I have a trusty assistant. Did I already mention my trusty assistant? I wasn't sure I needed one, and he has already proved invaluable; kind, capable and easy to work with. Today we started building a picket fence from white corrugated plastic and the barest outline of strapping to hold it all together. We get to make, I think, a 2D chandelier that will indicate that the scene takes place on the ceiling. We shall arm wrestle with the props and costume people for all the fun stuff.
Outside the theater, I tested laser-etching words on small stones. They have to be smooth, and not too hard for it to work at all. I managed one legible Nope, in curly script on a small pocket stone. I am delighted, and have to collect more stones for all the good suggestions various people have offered. I also started paying off a small amount of karma by working with the lab director on using a sewing machine. She did some test sewing first, and then made a small zippered bag from gorgeous silk castoffs from the Smith Theater.
