Alice missed, by a whisker, honors math. Actually what happens is a big test, and they take the top 36 or 40, and the rest of the kids who would also benefit from it are shut out.

Alice needs to be in honors math next year to avoid boredom and crankiness. She would thrive in the company of other honors kids.

The school seems bent on removing the option for honors math in the same way it has removed all other honors options. There is regular English and remedial. There is regular science, full stop. There is no place for bright kids to stretch their intellects within the school system.

I am, I admit, an intellectual snob.

This still seems like a mistake in placing Alice, and not like a failure in parenting. The school very much wants it to be my problem - that I am pushing her too hard, encouraging (or even requiring) her to take subjects she is not intellectually ready for. I'm pretty sure it is their problem, not recognizing and providing for the full population of bright kids.

ETA this is the least swearing I have managed in talking about this so far, which I think is laudable.
