seven for the seven stars in the sky
Jan. 7th, 2012 05:35 pmThere is a folk song with mysterious lyrics (many have mysterious lyrics, this one really mystified me). The song is Green Grow the Rushes(-o) and to me the most curious of the verses is seven, for seven stars in the sky. It is a counting up and backwards song, like the twelve days of Christmas song. One is one, and all alone, and ever more shall be so. Six is for the six proud walkers, eight for the April rainers, five for the symbols at your door - mixed in with the overt Christian motifs are some pretty fabulous pagan things. I think.
What used to be Digital Tradition and is now Mudcat Cafe has some useful explaining, but really, even they are kind of stumped.
And beyond this, a two horse day and some lovely weather. Yay.
