Dec. 28th, 2009 02:44 pmChristmas was all about magnets and mammoths. Christmas we had a looong discussion of the pygmy mammoths that lived on Flores and were hunted by hobbits. Alice found a bit of preserved mammoth hair for her father (in case he wants to clone his own) and in a fit of brilliance I found a VERY LARGE stuffed wooly mammoth toy for Alice. She has carried it steadily since Christmas day, which is gratifying. Yeah, she's 11. She is an affectionate kid. And the magnets were three sets of Bucky Balls, which I wasn't sure about but have been in constant circulation, with their owners and with various guests who are enchanted with 216 (6 cubed) small highly magnetic ball bearings. So that was successful, all told.
Today a friend helped me move Bully from one backyard to another. The old place flooded with the recent thaw, and was half covered with barrel deep water. Combined with other factors, it was an auspicious time to shift.
Bully loaded like the old hand he is, we got my gear loaded and drove through the snow to the new place. Once there I had a chance to hop on him, and actually trot!, in some circles!! in the indoor. I walked him around his new pasture, and set him loose. He was very coy about going to see the other horses on the other side of the fence (he's solitary at the moment) even though they were all crowding around their side and pushing and shoving to get a glimpse of the new guy. The charming thing about an old hand is how easy he is - I rode him, and cooled him out and led him around and after a little bugeyed looking he relaxed and seemed fine.
I am realizing that having been forced to take a lot of November and December off, or at least easy, I am less far into the midwinter dumps than some of you. I am sure I can plummet faster now that I have an indoor available, and can get good and sick of it. We'll see how things go. It is all too soon to tell.
