A tutorial on Deviant Art shows the steps one artist goes through to shade and color a pale skinned face. She uses 17 different colored pencils, in a fairly specific order, to get highlights, shadows, curves, reflected lights, and all kinds of other things I never thought of.
It makes me feel deeply inadequate, until I look at how many fabrics go into one of the pieces I've been working on. A minimum of 15 related prints for a background, and handpainted or collaged pieces for foregrounds.
Everyone works their own way.
