Having re-read all the Chanur books back to back to back, I realized one of my problme children was a Stsho, one of the flimsy, etheral species in the Compact. Still with hidden depths, but generally more likely to fold or flee

do I have kif on staff? the sound kids, perpetually jockeying for position, shoving and testing the boundaries and hierarchies all the fucking time. Heh. N is definitely Kif, and I spend my time ignoring him, shouting at him or administering faint but effective praise.

which would make lights .... Hani I guess, and the build crew is all the compact with some hani and some not - maybe more spacers all together. Spacers form different species, working together on a single large project with factions simmering within it. Generally factions supressed for the attainment of a larger goal.

Are all actors Stsho? Some of them could be methane breathers for all I understand them. Changeable, untranslatable, not necessarily multi-brained, but certainly presenting multiple faces? Or not. I think that is too devious for them. Too many layers - there are not enough layers to actors they are all surface and the surface peels off easily yielding another surface close to the top.

If Cherryh is widely applicable, what about Earth, union, alliance? Hah. Earth is all the adults, the old people the old practices, the people who say "when i was a kid..." and they want to keep it there somehow.

which makes union and alliance some weird combinations of students. Alliance is the spacers, trying to keep their ways of doing things in the face of clones and tape-learning over learning from the world and not having reactions installed. Maybe we are working to transform all the students to Alliance but some are still stuck in Union, still trying to figure out how to navigate the unknown. flux learning she calls it. What we all do all the time, anyhow. What we have no choice but to undertake, but we have choices about how much we rely on the teaching and telling of others and how we choose to organize our thoughts and our lives.
