The memorial service was wonderful and annoying; the god dude had a lot to say about Jesus that really had very little to do with Nancy, and as Aerin said, it sounded like he was working from a very bad translation in a valiant attempt to modernize the language and it came out sounding like some horrible cross between animal rescue language (we are all, apparently, promised a forever home with Jesus) and all the worst of the friendship language salad that spews out of some places. As an additional minus, the guy didn't pronounce her last name right which was just added sand in the psyche every time he said it.

The best part was the series of speakers (Nance had lined them up a couple months ago when it was clear what was happening) from her family, friends and colleagues at the school where she taught. That part didn't last long enough. It occurred to me (after everything was over, of course) I could have contributed something to that as well. Because before she was an amazing parent, teacher and parent-in-law, she was an older sister. And she would bring her homework in child psychology and teaching home, and apply it to her younger brother, as well as any parenting theories she could find and a certain amount of pedagogical theory. As a direct result of this experimentation, my husband grew up better than he might have, left to his own devices. Another reason I am grateful for her.
