I just finished Sharon Shinn's General Winston's Daughter last night. While I can see that it could be read as a response to McKinley's the Blue Sword, and I appreciated the colonialism and empire building from the other side, and the [spoiler] of the trusty native servant, but I have to say if I'd had ANY contact with the hero I would have SMACKED her.
